Childbirth Classes

Spinning babies is based on a concept called “Optimal Fetal Positioning”. This basic idea is that what you do prenatally and in labor, influences the baby's position and the progression of your labor, especially the pushing phase.    The idea is that if your baby is in a “good” position it will be easier for your baby to navigate the twists and turns of the pelvis and to be born more easily.

Gail Tully developed the Spinning Babies program. It is a compilation of a research about optimal fetal positioning, combined with 20 years of work with a small home birth practice in Minneapolis / St. Paul. She is well-respected in the midwifery community. We recommend going to her website and learning more about Spinning Babies concepts. She has a great deal of information available online, but if you prefer something more structured she has DVDs and workbooks you can use.

A 6-week series of classes that is also available as a home study course. It uses Gerald Kein's Painless Childbirth techniques instead of simple relaxation, breathing or guided imagery. It teaches moms how to remain in a deeply relaxed state while they are walking, talking, or changing positions, to be as mobile as they would like during childbirth. Mom's have reported good results to me, using this method.

The Bradley Method® series in designed for small classes with lots of individual attention. It is a 12 week course, covering 12 units of instruction.
The Bradley method emphasizes that birth is a natural process: mothers are encouraged to trust their body and focus on diet and exercise throughout pregnancy; and it teaches couples to manage labor through deep breathing and the support of a partner or labor coach.

HypnoBirthing® (The Mongan Method) is a method of childbirth education using special breathing, relaxation, visualization, meditative practice, attention to nutrition and positive body toning. HypnoBirthing® Classes are taught in a format of five, 2 1/2-hour classes. If you are very near to your birthing time, occasionally your Practitioner can make special arrangements for individual classes with you.

Birth Boot Camp prepares couples for birth and breastfeeding experiences through comprehensive online childbirth classes and in-person childbirth classes. This is a 10-week Comprehensive Course covering in and out of hospital birthing, newborn care, comfort measures, nutrition, and breastfeeding. There is a heavy focus on the importance of doulas. The foundation for Birth Boot Camp is found in the Baby Friendly Health Initiative. Families should be aware that support for this initiative means non-religious circumcision of newborns is discouraged.

A Brief Overview of Labor

Newborn Screenings

Good hearing is important for speech and language development. Hearing problems need to be identified as early as possible. If an infant has a hearing loss, steps can be taken to help the infant learn communication. Below is one of our favorite video to explain a little about why screening for hearing loss is important.

HEART SCREENING - (CCHD=Critical Congenital Heart Defects Screening)
Pulse oximetry  screening is a non-invasive screen. It measures how much oxygen is in the baby’s blood and can be helpful to determine if a baby's heart and lungs are healthy. The screening can also help identify babies with serious heart problems due to low levels of oxygen in their blood.

Babies often appear healthy at birth, but sometimes have hidden conditions that can be detected with a simple blood test. Detecting it early vastly improves your newborn’s chances at preventing the damaging effects of these conditions through immediate treatment. Failure to treat a baby who has one of these conditions within the first month of life can lead to intellectual disability, severe illness or death.
